CORRUPTION

Corruption, Which way Nigeria ?
Which way Nigeria , which way to go. I love my
father land, I want to know Which way Nigeria
is heading to … . Many years after our
independence we still find it had to start , How
long shall we be patience before we reach the
promise land? Let save Nigeria so that Nigeria
won ’ t fall……
This is an extract from one of the songs of
Late Sunny Okosun . This song was released in
the 80s . Some days ago , I was thinking about
what Sunny Okosun would have sung now ,
assuming he is still alive . Where is Nigeria
heading to ? Who will deliver this country from
the jaws of corruption? When will this monster
called corruption be destroyed ? What is the
way out for Nigeria ?
These are some of the many painful questions
that are crying for answers . The rate at which
this deadly virus called corruption is eating
deep into the society , is very worrisome ; from
the various levels of government , executive, the
legislative and judiciary to the corporate world
and security agencies , the story is the same.
One cannot but wonder how or when things
degenerated to this level.
There is now no big deal , when you hear that
someone is arrested or arraigned in respect of
a case of corruption. Former ministers , former
governors, former speakers of house of
representative, commissioners to local
government chairmen etc are all involved in the
mess called corruption. The story is the same
everywhere. The challenge now is that, all
these people whenever they are caught have no
shame whatsoever . You will see them beaming
with smiles as if they had won the National
honours.
I really wonder what messages we are sending
to the younger ones . Can it now be that , these
are the ones the youth see as role models and
this encourages them to dabble into internet
fraud and examination malpractices ? What we
do now , will go a long way to determine what
will become the future of this Nigeria .
We all
must fight
corruption
to a
standstill ;
enough of
paying
lip - service
to fighting
corruption. The only thriving business now
seems to be in politics; it is no wonder that
people are ready to do anything attain political
power. Service and the love of the nation have
been relegated to the background; and we are
all feasting on the nation like rats will feast on
cheese .
